Windmill Palm Tree, Drought tolerant, Cold Hardy and Disease Resistant

Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is a popular palm tree that is native to China and is often used in landscaping in colder regions. It is a slow-growing plant that can reach heights of up to 40 feet and has a crown of fan-shaped fronds at the top.

In landscaping, Windmill Palm Tree is often used as a focal point or accent plant and can add a tropical feel to any outdoor space. It prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade and is hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 7b through 11.

One of the unique features of Windmill Palm is its cold tolerance. It can withstand temperatures as low as 5°F, making it a great choice for gardeners in colder climates who want to add some tropical flair to their gardens.

Windmill Palm Trees are generally low-maintenance and require minimal pruning or care, although they may require occasional watering and fertilization during periods of drought. The tree also produces small, black fruit that is edible but not usually consumed due to its bitterness.

Overall, the Windmill Palm is a beautiful and hardy palm tree that can add a touch of tropical elegance to any garden or landscape, even in colder climates. If you're considering growing a Windmill Palm in your area, make sure to check your specific USDA plant hardiness zone and consult with a local gardening expert for further advice on care and maintenance.

Windmill Palm Landscape Design Ideas

Incorporating Windmill Palms into your landscape can add a touch of exotic beauty and create a serene atmosphere. Here are some design ideas to make the most of these elegant trees:

Focal Point: Plant a cluster of Windmill Palms in a central area of your garden to create a focal point that draws the eye and adds visual interest.

Privacy Screen: Use Windmill Palms strategically to create a natural privacy screen or windbreak along the edges of your property. Their lush fronds provide both privacy and a tropical feel.

Container Planting: Consider planting Windmill Palms in large containers on your patio or deck. Their graceful form and arching fronds can add a touch of sophistication to outdoor living spaces.

Companion Plants: Pair Windmill Palms with shade-loving plants like Ornamental Grasses, ferns, Shrubs or Border Plants to create a layered look in your garden beds. The contrast of textures and heights can enhance the overall aesthetic.

Night Lighting: Illuminate your Windmill Palms with subtle outdoor lighting to create a magical ambiance in the evenings. Up-lighting the trunks or spotlighting the fronds can accentuate their beauty after dark.

Remember to consider the mature size of the Windmill Palms when planning their placement in your landscape. These palms thrive in well-drained soil and partial shade, making them versatile additions to various garden settings.

Care & Maintainance

PLANTING, Palms can be planted all year round in tropical zones, select an area with FULL SUN to partial shade, ornamental palms are easily grown in a wide range of soils, including clay, alkaline and compacted soils, avoid wet soggy soils, once established palms are highly adaptable and drought resistant. When planting dig a hole twice as wide than your new plant's root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is parallel with the ground level, this is very important, planting the plant deeper than the original top soil line may severely damage the tree. Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated upright, use the excavated soil to back fill around the root ball, tamp down to ensure air pockets are eliminated, thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball. A 2-3 inch layer of organic hardwood mulch is strongly recommended, it will help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply the mulch over the entire planting area.

Repotting, Topical Palms can grow exceptionally well in pots for long periods of time, you'll only need to repot approximately every other year, do maintain a feeding schedule, the longer is kept in its existing pot the more nutrients are needed to maintain the plant happy and healthy. Once your Palm outgrows its original container, you can increase the pot size by 2 inches each time you repot to accommodate new growth.

Fertilizing, no need to fertilize right away, We fertilize our plants during the production phase with slow release fertilizer which can last an additional 3-5 months supplying residual nutrients to the plant. Fertilize during spring to summer base on label instructions. You may use a fertilizer formulated for tropical plants, preferably a slow release fertilizer 180 days duration.

Light, Thrives in full sun, can tolerate partial shade.

Water, indoors twice a week, mist fronds 2-3 times a week to increase humidity and simulate it s native tropical environment. outdoors twice a week during the first growing season, after that rain water will suffix.

Pruning: Regular maintenance is needed, Palms will naturally shed lower fronds as new shoots are formed, Simply remove or cut off any fronds as they turn yellow or brown. This improves the look of your plant and stimulates new green fronds to grow healthier.
