Care Guide for Rocky Mountain Juniper

PLANTING:

  • Choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.
  • Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball.
  • Place the juniper in the hole, making sure it's level with the ground.
  • Backfill the hole with soil and gently press down to remove any air pockets.
  • Water thoroughly to settle the soil and remove any air pockets.

SOIL:

  • Rocky Mountain junipers prefer well-drained soil.
  • If the soil is heavy, mix in sand or grit to improve drainage.
  • Junipers are not picky about soil pH and will grow in most soil types.

MULCH:

  • Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the juniper.
  • Avoid mulching too close to the trunk, as this can lead to rot.
  • Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil and suppress weed growth.

LIGHT:

  • Rocky Mountain junipers need full sun to partial shade.
  • If planting in partial shade, choose a location that gets morning sun and afternoon shade.
  • Too much shade can lead to leggy growth and reduced vigor.

WATER:

  • Once established, Rocky Mountain junipers are quite drought-tolerant.
  • Water regularly during the first growing season, then only as needed during dry periods.
  • Overwatering can lead to root rot, so be careful not to overwater.

FERTILIZE:

  • Fertilize during the spring before new growth begins.
  • If desired, apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
  • Avoid using

PRUNING:

  • Not necessary, it will maintain its columnar growth habit naturally.
