Houseplants have been trending for a while in the design world-they're easy ways to introduce vibrant color to a space. Everyone's familiar with the most popular varieties, like fiddle leaf figs and Monsteras, but there are a bunch of other varieties that plant enthusiasts covet. Having one of those rare houseplants is an honor-they are so exclusive, or at least, people only have difficulty finding them in stores, are hard to maintain, or are not well known.

1. Monstera Obliqua (Peruvian Form)

The Monstera obliqua possesses a surplus amount of leaf arrangements, so it has often been mistaken for the more common Monstera adansonii. It comes from Peru and grows very slowly, tolerates high humidity, but must be watered quite frequently because it is a tropical plant. The most suitable condition to keep it is bright, indirect lighting which promotes growth. An important reminder: all Monsteras are a mild threat to humans and pets, so make sure to keep them out of reach of little ones and fur babies!

2. Firefly Leopard Plant

This Farfugium japonicum, also known as the firefly leopard plant, is a rare species from East Asia. It has spotted leaves that look like glowing fireflies. It prefers partial to full shade because it tends to wilt when exposed to too much direct sunlight. This plant thrives in mid to high humidity so a mister or humidifier might be helpful. The good news: it's not toxic, so you can add it safely inside your home!

3. Paraiso Verde Philodendron

A very popular plant is the Paraiso Verde Philodendron, although supply is expected to increase during 2024. This tropical plant has attractive variegated leaves and will grow vines up to 10 feet long. If given ideal conditions of moist soil, warmth, high humidity, and bright indirect light, it grows amazingly fast. However, it's toxic to your pets and you, so keep it out of the reach of both. It is one of the favorite patterned plants.

4. Black ZZ Plant

The Black ZZ plant is often referred to as the "raven ZZ" for its dark, nearly black leaves with greenish undertones. This is possibly the most unique twist on the rather more common ZZ plant. Native to the arid regions of Eastern Africa, this low-maintenance shrub is drought-tolerant and does well in a variety of light, which makes it one of the easier-to-care-for plants. It's toxic, though, so this one would do best out of pet reach.

5. Thai Constellation Monstera

A "true" it plant for the last five years, this Monstera variety stands out for its dark-green leaves with signature fenestrations along with splashes of creamy white. The plant grows slowly, especially indoors. When it matures, it throws around a show-stopper of leaves due to its growth potential. In fact, under ideal conditions, a leaf can grow over 2 feet in length.

Its slow-growing nature has been difficult to propagate, making it rather rare; however, it is recently becoming more widely available. Like the old-time Monstera deliciosa, it prefers medium to bright light, watering when the top 25-50% of soil is dry, average household temperatures, and moderate to high humidity levels will keep it happy.

6. Baltic Blue Pothos

Those who love pothos will surely swoon over the lovely Baltic Blue in this gorgeous houseplant. Being a fast-grower with big, beautiful blue-green leaves, Baltic Blue is not picky; it'll thrive in bright indirect light and loves to be quite thoroughly watered when 85% dry, too, and can use a stake for climbing. This variety of pothos plants one, by the way, to pets- has been available only since 2022, so you'll be one of the first on your block to have this beautiful beauty for your plant collection.
