Family: Cupressaceae

This densely-foliated, wide pyramidal, columnar evergreen grows fairly quickly, ultimately reaching heights up to 40 feet and width of 25-foot at the base. The dense growth and attractive foliage make Southern Redcedar a favorite for windbreaks, screens, and wildlife-cover for large-scale landscapes. Its high salt-tolerance makes it ideal for seaside locations. Redcedar can make a nice Christmas tree, and the fragrant wood is popular for repelling insects.

Description
Cedar Key, FL, once had extensive redcedar forests before the lumber was extensively harvested and the wood used for chests and pencils. Although not currently used often as a street tree, its wood is strong, the foliage is clean, and the seed is small making it a suitable candidate. There are some nice examples of street tree use in southern cities. With proper pruning to remove lower branches, it should adapt well to street-scapes.

Planted in full sun or partial shade, Southern Redcedar will easily grow on a variety of soils, including clay. Growth may be poor in landscapes which are over-irrigated. It performs admirably with no care, even on alkaline soil and along the coast. Usually insects and diseases are not a problem if grown in full sun.

Planting and Care Guide

PLANTING recommendations, select an area with FULL SUN, Southern Red Cedar Trees are easily grown in a wide range of soils, including clay, alkaline and compacted soils, avoid wet soggy soils, once established Sothern Red Cedar Trees are highly adaptable. When it’s time to plant your tree, Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is parallel with the ground level, this is very important, planting the tree deeper than the original top soil line may severely damage the tree. Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated upright, use the excavated soil to back fill around the root ball, gently press down as you fill the hole and thoroughly soak with a hose to ensure air pockets are eliminated, Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball. A 2-3 inch layer of organic hardwood mulch is strongly recommended, it will help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply the mulch over the entire planting area.

LIGHT, Full Sun, Partial Shade

WATER your Sothern Red Cedar Brodie deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep and strong root system, increase frequency during extremely hot days, you should always verify the top 2-3 inches of soil, if dry to the touch is time to water, you can reduce frequency of watering once the tree is established.

FERTILIZE your cypress trees during spring before new growth begins, Applying a slow-release, 180 days duration, well balance fertilizer is probably the simplest solution and least expensive.

PRUNING the Sothern Red Cedar Tree is not necessary unless a certain height is desired. This plant will naturally retain it's columnar form.

MAINTAINING the Sothern Red Cedar Tree is simple, they require little or no upkeep, they are disease and pests resistance which eliminates the need for spraying chemicals which can be very harsh to our environments.
