Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is a popular houseplant often purchased during the holidays as a Christmas tree, these wonderful trees can also brighten your landscape long after the holidays end, plant them as an accent plant or screen for privacy. While this tree can grow quite large in its natural habitat, Norfolk Island pine is slow growing, drought tolerant and easy to care.

If you are planning to give your Norfolk Island pine a spot in your landscape, remember that these trees get quite large. Be sure you have the room for a 60 to 70 foot mature tree. If not, consider simply enjoying this lovely little tropical tree as a container plant.

Characteristics

Norfolk Island pines are not true pines; they are members of a pre-historic family of conifers Araucariaceae, an incredibly diverse and widespread plant family during the Jurassic and Cretaceous time periods. The end of the Cretaceous period saw not only the extinction of the dinosaurs, but the extinction of members of the Araucariaceae family in the northern hemisphere. However, in the southern hemisphere, members of the Araucariaceae family continued to thrive.

Norfolk Island, where this tree hails from, is located in the South Pacific between Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. The flag of this Australian territory actually features the Norfolk Island pine. While sold here in the states as tabletop Christmas trees, in their native habitat these plants can incredibly reach 200 feet tall and have trunks that swell to 10 feet in diameter! In Florida these trees typically grow to only 60 to 80 feet.

Care & Maintainance

Planting and Care

Indoors, these plants need quite bright light and humidity. If your find that your plant is not thriving, in all likelihood it is likely not receiving sufficient light or humidity.

In Florida we know all about humidity, but we strive to keep it out of our homes, so how do you make it humid for your houseplants? Overwatering is not the answer; Norfolk Island pines don't appreciate being too wet. Instead, fill a saucer with water and rocks or gravel, then place the potted plant on top making sure the pot is not sitting directly in water. There you have it—you've created your own little high-humidity microclimate. When you find the spot in your house with the right light for your plant, don't forget to turn the plant every week or so to keep it growing straight and upright.

PLANTING:

Choose location with direct sunlight.
Dig hole twice the width and depth of root ball.
Place tree in hole, ensuring root ball is level with soil.
Fill hole with soil and gently press down.
Water thoroughly to settle soil around roots.

SOIL:

Easily grown in a range of soils, including clay, alkaline and compacted.
Avoid wet and soggy soils.

MULCH:

Apply 2-3 inch layer of mulch around tree base.
Helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, regulate soil temperature.

LIGHT:

Indoors bright light.
Outdoors thrives in full sun.
Avoid planting in areas that receive less than 4 hours of direct sunlight per day.

WATER:

Water well every 2-3 days until established.
Water frequently during extremely hot months.
Once established, water only during extended periods of drought.

FERTILIZE:

Fertilize during early spring with a slow-release, well-balanced fertilizer.

PRUNING:

Pruning is not necessary.
