FishTail Palm, Caryota Mitis, Clustering Palms Great for Privacy and Container Planting Indoors.

Fish Tail Palm also known as Caryota Mitis features large feathery arching fronds organize in a very unique pattern setting it apart from any other palm, their growth habit is clustering together forming a dense bush of different height plants, the end of each leaflets resembles the fins of a fish tail commanding attention both indoor and outdoor. The Fishtail Palm can be grown in full sun or part shade, they are moderately cold tolerant, and can withstand temperatures as low as 35 degrees, this one is an evergreen that can grow up to 30ft high when planted outdoors.

Fishtails are often used to create privacy screens between neighbors, fence lines, or in backyards, like the areca palms fish tails can grow very dense, they can be planted in rows 2-3 feet apart or staggered. Caryota Mitis is often used in interior escapes as potted plants, to decorate hotel entrances, lobbies, offices, patios, or decks, as a container plant it provides a very unique focal point in any setting. Fishtail Palms produce flowers in the form of berries, these are also the seeds that can be used to reproduce themselves in nature, the berries are toxic to both pets and humans.

Creating Privacy between Property Lines: Fishtail palms grow in clusters, producing new shoots and creating a very dense result, great for Privacy between neighbors, a live fence with plants, or a screen. If you want to plant in a straight line, Plan on Spacing out the Christmas Palm 3-4 feet apart. If you want a more natural look, stagger the trees and space them about 2-3 feet apart, as they mature, they will create a great windbreak and privacy fence. Leave room on the property line for the trees to grow.  Don't plant directly on the property line because they will grow over the line onto your neighbor's property.

Before purchasing a Fishtail Palm, read about the recommended care instructions to keep this plant healthy and flourishing.

DISCLOSURE
Please note Fishtail Palm are susceptible to some yellowing and browning of the bottom leaves, stress from shipping and natural growth will cause the bottom fronds to yellow before browning, some level of maintenance is needed, trimming the frond once they begin to brown is needed, you may prune the frond from the bottom section of its own stem about an inch from the main trunk, this will also help the plant remain vibrant and promote new growth while exposing the main trunk.

Additional Care and Maintenance Tips

PLANTING, Palms can be planted all year round, select an area with FULL SUN, ornamental palms are easily grown in a wide range of soils, including clay, alkaline and compacted soils, avoid wet soggy soils, once established palms are highly adaptable and drought resistant. When planting dig a hole twice as wide than your new plant's root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is parallel with the ground level, this is very important, planting the plant deeper than the original top soil line may severely damage the tree. Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated upright, use the excavated soil to back fill around the root ball, tamp down to ensure air pockets are eliminated, thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball. A 2-3 inch layer of organic hardwood mulch is strongly recommended, it will help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply the mulch over the entire planting area.

Fertilizing, no need to fertilize right away, We fertilize our plants during the production phase with slow release fertilizer which can last an additional 2-3 months supplying residual nutrients to the plant. Fertilize during spring or fall base on label instructions. You may use a fertilizer formulated for interior plants, preferably a slow release fertilizer 180 days duration.

    Overall, I’m very happy with the palm tree itself. It arrived in good condition, looks healthy, and is already thriving. My only real complaint is the shipping. They use FedEx, which—at least in the Carolinas—has been consistently unreliable. My delivery was delayed multiple times before it finally showed up, which is frustrating, especially when you’re ordering live plants. I’d strongly recommend they consider using a different shipping carrier. One other suggestion: labeling the plants would be extremely helpful. I ordered five different palms, and if I didn’t already have a general idea of what they looked like, I wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart. Great product overall, but improving shipping and labeling would make a big difference.
