The weather outside might be freezing, but indoors, having some plants around makes this time of year much more delightful and cozy. Plants can make our indoor spaces much cozier and more welcoming. As we enter the coldest months of the year throughout much of the US, Eureka Farms shares our top five favorite houseplants to buy in winter.

1. Indoor Aloe Plant

An aloe plant is one of your best choices for the wintertime. So long as you maintain your inside temperatures relatively constant, the cold temperatures outside will not disturb this popular house succulent. It should bloom all year long, as the dry winter air and plentiful bright sunlight are to its liking. Aloe has far more benefits than the ambiance that it brings to your home. It is one of the most researched plants for medicinal use.

It is observed to be very nutrient-rich and hydrating to the skin. The aloe gel, contained within the inner part of the leaf, can permeate through three layers of the epidermal layers of the skin, trapping a considerable amount of moisture. It is also more commonly used for its cooling effects. Aloe gel can be applied very thinly on sunburns, minor kitchen burns, and itchy bugs bites to soothe them and heal them quite fast.

2. Snake Plant

What makes a snake plant so awesome is that it’s impossible to kill. For anyone who was not blessed with a green thumb, a snake plant is a great plant to start with. While it’s not recommended, it can go up to 2 weeks without being watered! The snake plant comes from Madagascar, Africa, and Southern Asia so it is very used to both harsh and consistently changing climates. It prefers dry, sandy soil. Snake plants are at the top of the list of air-purifying plants. Something unusual they do is release oxygen at night through a process called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (cam). They only open their stomata at night, to avoid dehydration. They capture CO2 and release O2, during the day they use the stored organic acids for use in photosynthesis.

3. Philodendron

Last, but certainly not least, comes the philodendron. This gregarious, trailing plant is so very easygoing. People often mistake a philodendron for a monstera plant, although many species go by the name philodendron and look rather different from one another. Maybe the easiest way to tell is when to look at the leaves. Monstera leaves are in shape like philodendrons, but the monstera leaves have several open spaces and holes.

It needs moderate to direct sunlight and a temperature range from 60-78 degrees. That would be perfect for indoors all year round. It does extremely well in a hanging basket and is often seen with its leaves spilling down the sides of shelves, walls, and bookcases. It does make a statement piece for your living space all on its own.

4. Bromeliad

Bring that tropical getaway feel into your house, even when winter rolls around, with a lively, cheerful bromeliad. The fabulous, striking, and long-lasting blooms brighten up any space you place them in and are adaptable and low-maintenance, making them the ideal addition to your collection this season. Most of the water they require is trapped by the "vase" surrounding the middle of the plant. Keep their vase constantly partially filled with water and give your Bromeliads indirect bright light. They bloom well indoors for you to enjoy. For healthy plants follow our Best Winter Care Tips for the House Plants.

5. Ponytail Palm

Another low-maintenance, tough plant is the Ponytail Palm, which is a great choice for some winter foliage in your home. It is one of those plants that are common for their whimsical leaves sprouting from a strong, water-storing trunk, growing in desert conditions. The ponytail palm does not require a humid environment for it to thrive but does need some bright, direct sunlight coming out of a south or west-facing window. It is quite forgiving of irregular and infrequent waterings, so it is perfect for the beginner plant parent. You can add some winter plants to your garden as well.
