Design with Plants

DESIGN IDEAS AND LANDSCAPE USES

Clusia Trees are grown throughout Florida mostly as privacy hedges, they provide a dense evergreen foliage, can be excellent privacy trees when lined in rows to form a hedge style along fences on backyards creating a complete privacy screen, they also create windbreaks reducing wind conditions during winter months and also during hot summer months as well. Great choice for Erosion Control, avoid soil spilling during heavy rains.
Natural fencing is becoming more and more popular thanks to the proliferation of fast growing trees and shrubs, allowing a much more environmentally friendly, sympathetic and unobtrusive method of shielding yourself from prying eyes. There are many natural options available to you for the purpose of screening, whether it is for a sizeable length of your land or just something for a corner. Clusia trees as hedges sets itself apart from most all of the options when it comes to trees, thanks to its wonderful color, highly unusual structure and form.

Creating Privacy between Property Lines:
Plan on Spacing out the Clusia Trees 2 feet apart If you want to plant in a straight line, Leave room on the property line for the trees to grow. Don't plant directly on the property line because they will grow over the line onto your neighbor's property.

Create a Hedge:
Clusia Trees can grow so fast, you can Create an instant privacy hedge or living fence, Plant your new Clusia Trees 2 feet apart. As your trees grow, prune the tops and hedge the sides, gradually shape or design your own living fence.

Privacy for Pool Areas:
Add Clusia Trees to areas of your yard that require privacy. You do not have to plant trees all over your yard. Simply look for areas where you can plant three or four trees in a row to block out your neighbor's house or window, cover an air conditioning or pool pump structure by adding clusia trees around these structures.

Care & Maintainance

HOW TO CARE FOR CLUSIA GUTTIFERA TREE

Before purchasing a Clusia guttifera tree, read about the recommended care instructions to keep this plant healthy and flourishing.

PLANTING AND CARE - Planting recommendations, select an area with FULL SUN, Clusia Trees are easily grown in a wide range of soils with good drainage, avoid wet soggy soils, once established Calusia Tree is highly adaptable. When it’s time to plant your tree, Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is parallel with the ground level, this is very important, planting the tree deeper than the original top soil line may severely damage the tree. Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated upright, use the excavated soil to back fill around the root ball, tamp down to ensure air pockets are eliminated, thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball. A 2-3 inch layer of organic hardwood mulch is strongly recommended, it will help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply the mulch over the entire planting area.

WATER MANAGEMENT FOR CLUSIA TREES- Clusia plants are known to be drought tolerant, however once planted water frequently until the plants are stablish.

LIGHT - Full Sun, Trees generally require full sun for fastest and healthiest growth. if intended for indoor use, Clusia should be placed near a window where the plant can receive the brightest available light, east, south, and west facing windows are the best options, we recommend to rotate the plant occasionally, this will allow the plant to receive bright light from different angles, it can minimize leaf drops from within the canopy and allow the plant to maintain even healthy growth all year round.

HUMIDITY - The Benefits of Misting, Many of our houseplants come from the tropics, where humidity is very high, generally the air in our homes is dry. Misting houseplants is a very simple and effective way to boost humidity, an easy solution to the risk of overwatering your plants, pay attention to the color and texture of the leaves on your plant. Generally Plants with brown or dry leaf tips will benefit from regular misting, preferably in the mornings to allow the foliage to completely dry out during the day.

FERTILIZING – No need to fertilize right away, We fertilize our plants during the production phase with slow release fertilizer which can last an additional 2-3 months supplying residual nutrients to the plant. Once you do decide to fertilize You may use a fertilizer formulated for outdoor plants, preferably a slow release fertilizer 180 days duration, fertilize during spring or fall base on label instructions.

HOW TO GROW A NEW BRANCH - You may encourage your tree to branch in certain areas using a technique called notching, this process can create a more dense and bush canopy. To accomplish this, pick the area on the main stem were you would like a new branch to sprout, use a clean knife or shears to cut a ¼-inch notch in the trunk, within a few weeks you may see a bud forming and it will gradually start to grow into a branch.

PRUNING - Pruning is important for keeping your Clusia trees healthy and well-balanced, Most proud Clusia plant owners prefer to keep their plant with a nice shape. Pruning should be done first If you notice any diseased leaves, be sure to trim those off immediately, using a clean knife or shears, pruning of branches can be made just above any node, right about where a leaf attaches to a stem, This will reduce the size of the plant which may have caused a non uniform growth, and promote new growth from the point where the cut was made. You may also need to prune from time to time to control the tree’s size and shape. Before pruning be sure to identify the areas where cuts will be made, especially if you’re pruning to shape your tree. Try marking the areas you want to cut with colored strings or ribbons before cutting.

INSECTS OR DESEASES - Here’s another plus, Clusia Trees are not regularly affected by pests. in the event that scale, mealy bugs, or mites are found to affect the plant, they can be controlled by applying horticultural oils, spray directly onto the insects, A second and third treatment, if using oils, will be necessary. Space out the sprays at 3 week intervals to break up the mealybug life cycle.
