Joey Palm, Diamond Joey Palm, Umbrella Palm Johannesteijsmannia Lanceolata, Exotic and Rare.
Johannesteijsmannia altifrons, commonly known as the Joey Palm or Diamond Joey, is a striking, exotic tropical palm with dramatic, oversized pinnate fronds and trunkless tropical palm, famous for its massive, undivided, diamond-shaped leaves.
Native to the rainforest of southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. Growth habit is solitary, essentially trunkless (stem is subterranean), with huge, pleated leaves rising straight from the ground. Leaves can grow up to 10 feet long and 6 feet wide, with the overall plant reaching 15 to 20 feet tall in ideal conditions.
Provide filtered light to deep shade, direct sun can scorch the massive leaves. The soil must be kept evenly moist and should never be allowed to dry out completely. Prefers humus-rich, and well-draining soil that avoids compaction. Growth Rate is very slow, as the plant spends significant energy establishing its underground root system before pushing out large fronds.
Overall, the Joey Palm is a unique and attractive palm tree that can add beauty and interest to any landscape, its large diamond-shaped leaves fronds form in clusters atop a single hidden trunk.
