Seagrape, Coccoloba Uvifera Sea Grape

Seagrape (Coccoloba uvifera) is a hardy, coastal evergreen shrub or tree native to South Florida, the Caribbean, and tropical America. It is widely known for its distinct, leathery circular leaves and clusters of edible purple fruits that play a critical role in coastal dune stabilization.

Leaves: Large, thick, and nearly round (8 to 10 inches wide). They are bright green with prominent red veins. New growth shows a bronze tint and leaves often turn fully red before falling in winter. Flowers: Small, fragrant, ivory or cream-colored flowers bloom on long spikes during the spring. Fruit: Drooping, dense clusters of green fruits that look like grapes. They ripen to a deep purple in late summer and early fall. Size: Highly variable based on the environment. It reaches 10 to 15 feet high along windy coastlines but can scale up to 35 to 50 feet when planted inland.

Erosion Control: The sprawling root system binds sandy shores together. This protects beaches, barrier islands, and dunes from storm erosion. Wildlife Habitat: The fruit feeds native birds and small mammals. The blossoms provide nectar for honeybees and native butterflies. Near beaches, its dense canopy blocks bright coastal building lights that could otherwise confuse nesting sea turtles. Edibility: The ripe purple fruits can be eaten raw. They are also popular for making sweet jams, jellies, and local sea grape wine.

Care & Maintainance

PLANTING AND CARE - If Planting in the ground dig a hole twice as large than the pot you purchased, Remove the tree from the grower pot, you may cut off the plastic pot if needed. Drop the plant level to the soil, Water the tree as you back fill soil to remove air pockets. Cover the new soil with mulch to retain moisture and keep weeds away.

WATER MANAGEMENT - Water 2-3 times a week for the first growing season, once established rain water will suffice.

LIGHT - Full Sun, bright light is optimal and will encourage a higher rate of growth.

PRUNING, is an essential part of caring for Muscadine grapes. It not only helps maintain the shape and size of the vine, but it also promotes healthier growth and higher yields. Pruning should be done during the dormant season (late winter to early spring) by removing dead or damaged wood and thinning out the branches.

FERTILIZING – No need to fertilize right away, We fertilize our plants during the production phase with slow release fertilizer which can last an additional 2-3 months supplying residual nutrients to the plant. Once you do decide to fertilize You may use a slow release granular fertilizer 180 days duration, fertilize during spring or fall base on label instructions.

INSECTS OR DESEASES - In the event that scale, mealy bugs, or mites are found to affect the plant, they can be controlled by applying horticultural neem oil that can be sprayed directly onto the insects, A second and third treatment, when using oils, will be necessary. Space out the sprays at 2 weeks intervals to break up the mealybug life cycle.
