Citrus reticulata 'Honey Murcott' Tangerine, Mandarin Orange (Edible)

The Honey Murcott (botanically classified as Citrus reticulata 'Murcott') is a highly popular, late-maturing hybrid between a mandarin orange and a sweet orange. Often marketed interchangeably as the Honey Tangerine or Murcott Mandarin, it is widely celebrated for its intense, syrup-like sweetness balanced by a mild tang. Originally developed by the USDA in the early 20th century, it has become one of the most commercially vital late-season citrus crops, particularly in Florida.

Fruits are typically 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter, with a smooth, radiant, reddish-orange peel and vibrant orange-red flesh. Flavor is exceptionally sweet and aromatic with high sugar content, mirroring its "honey" moniker. While some modern strains boast fewer seeds, traditional Murcotts typically contain 12 to 24 seeds per fruit. The thin skin is slightly dimpled and moderately easy to peel, making it adaptable for eating fresh out of hand or pressing into high-yield, premium juices.

Compact Size, Cultivars are moderately vigorous, featuring an upright, willow-like growth pattern with slender branches. They reach average heights of 10 to 15 feet, though they can be pruned smaller for container gardening.

Abundant Harvest, A late-season variety, with fruit typically ripening from January through April depending on the regional climate.

Growing Requirements, Honey tangerine trees thrive in warm climates, preferably USDA hardiness zones 9-11. They require full sun exposure and well-drained soil. Regular watering and fertilization will promote healthy growth and fruit production. Pruning can help maintain the tree's shape and encourage airflow.

FERTILIZING – No need to fertilize right away, We fertilize our plants during the production phase with slow release fertilizer which can last an additional 2-3 months supplying residual nutrients to the plant. Once you do decide to fertilize You may use a slow release granular fertilizer 180 days duration, fertilize during spring or fall base on label instructions.

PRUNNING in not needed until the tree matures into its 2nd or 3rd year of life. You may begin to prune at some point to keep the plant healthy and control the height, since the Olive tree can reach 20ft in height and 10ft in width, pruning is recommended in order to keep the fruits within reach.

INSECTS OR DESEASES - In the event that scale, mealy bugs, or mites are found to affect the plant, they can be controlled by applying horticultural neem oil that can be sprayed directly onto the insects, A second and third treatment, when using oils, will be necessary.
